Capturing beauty alone is art, but design uniquely integrates both aesthetics and practical function. Aesthetic objects become design when they serve clear purposes, even if purely emotional or sensory. However, art without beauty cannot qualify as design, as effective design consistently combines visual appeal with functionality. Design requires function for it to exist but sometimes that function can be purely aesthetic and that is when it is art, therefore I think design is a superset that includes most aesthetic and emotionally functional objects but ugly art is not design. Effective design demands both aesthetic and functional integrity.
