Good design is not always done for people and it is not always done by people. However, good design is always done for a target user; let it be aliens, robots, animals or yourself; if you know their very distinct needs, desires, ambitions and goals, you can come up with products, projects, experiences and ideas that would be demanded, beloved and bought; for understanding any such need, you would need excellent observation skills and you should invest your precious time to have an understanding of the target users.
